There is no way anyone can justify this invasion and the carnage being inflicted on the people of Ukraine. But Putin knew going in that there was little that the rest of the world would do to stop him. He knows that there will be no meaningful sanctions applied because many European countries are heavily dependent on Russian oil and gas for their economies, and they are probably unwilling to risk having Russia cut them off.
It would seem, however, that there would be greater efforts made to supply Ukraine with the arms they desperately need and are begging for, but even that is not forthcoming.
It appears, as Putin probably suspected, that there would be nothing to keep him from gaining control of Ukraine!
